Historical Overview

The Paulista University, UNIP, recognised by Directive No. 550/88, started operations on November 09th 1988. It was established based on the Paulista Unified Institute (Instituto Unificado Paulista – IUP), the Paulista Engineering Teaching Institute (Instituto de Ensino de Engenharia Paulista – IEEP) and the Paulista Dentistry Institute (Instituto de Odontologia Paulista – IOP); the first of these gained the authorization to operate in 1972, with the courses of Social Communications, Languages, Education and Psychology.

Nowadays, thanks to its development, UNIP, through a modern academic proposal, has been expanding its activities to many different campuses, seeking to prepare highly qualified human resources as requested by the policies of national development.

UNIP promotes the update of qualifications of the students and their preparation for a changing society, through a highly- qualified, technologically- advanced and future-oriented education, in humanities, social sciences, exact sciences and health sciences. Its main purpose is that of promoting the development of the students’ potential, establishing conditions for an active insertion on the labour market and for creative solutions to problems that society proposes.

Brazilian reality, which deserves special attention on the part of UNIP, makes the institution also emphasize post-graduation studies. These are dedicated to the enhancement of the teaching staff as well as to the needs of the community, given that, as well as qualifying professors in all areas, and developing research studies that aim at producing science and technological innovations, UNIP proposes to address the requirements of the modern world.

Thus, Universidade Paulista has been gaining recognition as an important knowledge production centre, and of spread of knowledge to a greater number of people, through Education activities, research, extension and graduate courses.
