Syllabus

Cultural Studies from a historical perspective: Birmingham and the CCCS (England); communication, mass culture, popular culture; the role of everyday life. Gramscian readings: the concept of hegemony. Latin American Cultural Studies: J Martin-Barbero and N. Garcia Canclini, mediations and hybridisms. Culture and its political dimension. The question of identities: multiculturalism, interculturality, representation and resistance. Reception Studies: uses and appropriations. Postmodernity and Postcolonialism. Communication and culture as shaping the contemporary world: local / global flows, consumer culture, lifestyle and identity.
